ELICOS to VET Pathway: Entry Requirements

ELICOS to VET Pathway: What Should You Check Before Moving From General English? Planning to continue your education after studying English in Australia? Understanding the ELICOS to VET pathway can help you prepare for your next qualification and avoid common enrolment mistakes. English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) develop language skills, while vocational education and training (VET) focuses on practical, industry-related competencies. At Australian Sovereign College (AuSC), students can explore General English alongside qualifications in business, hospitality, information technology and other fields. Before moving between courses, it is important to check English proficiency, academic eligibility, admission requirements and enrolment arrangements. What Is an ELICOS to VET Pathway? An ELICOS to VET pathway involves studying English before progressing to a vocational qualification. Students may choose this pathway to strengthen their communication skills before undertaking training delivered in English. For example, someone interested in hospitality may study General English before applying for a commercial cookery qualification. However, completing ELICOS does not automatically guarantee admission to a VET course . Students must satisfy the entry requirements of their intended qualification. The Australian Government's ESOS Framework outlines requirements and protections relating to education for overseas students. How Does General English Prepare Students for VET Study? AuSC's General English program develops four essential language skills: Speaking: Participating in discussions and communicating ideas. Listening: Understanding instructions, explanations and conversations. Reading: Interpreting written information and learning materials. Writing: Preparing responses, assignments and everyday communications. These skills are relevant to vocational training, where students may need to understand technical instructions, participate in practical activities and complete assessments. AuSC's General English program offers six levels, from Beginner to Advanced. Students complete a placement test and interview to identify their appropriate starting level. What English Requirements Should You Check Before Applying? English language requirements vary between VET qualifications. Some courses may require evidence of English proficiency through an accepted test, previous study or another assessment method. Before applying, check: The English proficiency requirement for your intended course. Which English tests or alternative evidence AuSC accepts. Whether your results remain valid. Whether completing a particular General English level satisfies the course's admission conditions. Whether additional assessments are required. Do not assume that completing Intermediate or Advanced General English automatically meets every VET course's English requirement. AuSC must assess your eligibility against the requirements of the selected qualification. Which VET Courses Can Students Explore After General English? Australian Sovereign College offers qualifications across several vocational study areas.
