How to Check a Training Provider Is Legitimate: RTO, CRICOS and training.gov.au

How to Check if an RTO Is Registered: A Guide to Legitimate Training Providers in Australia Choosing a training provider is an important decision, especially when investing in your education. Understanding how to check if an RTO is registered helps you confirm whether a college is authorised to deliver nationally recognised vocational qualifications. In Australia, students can verify training providers through the official National Training Register and, where applicable, the CRICOS register . These free government resources help domestic and international students make informed enrolment decisions. How Can You Check if an RTO Is Registered in Australia? To check whether a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is registered, visit training.gov.au and search using the provider's name or RTO number. Review its current registration status and confirm that your intended qualification appears within its approved scope of registration. International students intending to study in Australia on student visas should also verify the provider and course through CRICOS. For example, Australian Sovereign College (AuSC) publishes RTO Code 45680 and CRICOS Provider Code 03907K , which students can use to locate its registration records. What Is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)? A Registered Training Organisation is an education provider authorised by an Australian vocational education and training (VET) regulator to deliver and assess nationally recognised training. RTOs include private colleges, TAFE institutes and other approved training organisations. Australia's VET sector offers qualifications across industries including business, construction, automotive, hospitality and community services. However, not every organisation offering training is an RTO. Some businesses provide workshops or professional development courses that do not lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Registered providers operate under Australia's VET regulatory framework. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regulates much of the sector, while some providers are regulated by state-based authorities. Importantly, RTO registration does not authorise an organisation to deliver every qualification. Each provider has an approved scope of registration , identifying the training products it can deliver and assess. Why Should You Verify an RTO Before Enrolling? Checking registration helps you verify essential information before submitting an application or paying fees. An RTO registration check allows you to confirm: Whether the organisation is currently registered. Whether its RTO number matches official records. Whether your intended qualification is within its approved scope. Whether the provider's legal and trading names are consistent. Whether additional CRICOS verification is necessary. Government records provide an independent source of information rather than relying entirely on advertising. Registration is an important starting point, but students should also consider course suitability, fees, delivery arrangements and student support. How Do You Check an RTO on training.gov.au? The Australian Government's National Training Register provides publicly accessible information about registered training providers and nationally recognised qualifications. Follow these five steps.
